Cats

Cats are the most common companion animals in New Zealand. Cats are also predators, and may hunt native wildlife including birds, lizards and insects.

Recognising these facts, Forest & Bird has developed a policy on cats. The goal of our policy is to promote the protection of native species by minimising the impact of cats on native wildlife, while recognising the role that cats play as companion animals. Ideally, this goal would be achieved by ensuring that every cat in New Zealand is a responsibly owned and cared for domestic cat.

The cat policy was developed in consultation with our members and branches, as well as other organisations including the Conservation Authority, SPCA, Companion Animal Council and Veterinary Association.
