What's this?

Description: Garfish are relatively short-lived and, whilst similar species occur around the world, this species is found only in New Zealand. They are common in shallow coastal waters, such as bays and harbours, when they school at the surface.

Ecological concerns: The lack of some basic biological information, information on stock size and yield estimates, the uncertainty of some biological information, limited research, huge uncertainty about stock boundaries and absence of a management plan.

Economic value: Export markets include Asia.

Best option: Garfish is one of the best New Zealand seafood choices as the fishing methods have minimal ecological impact.
