The Central auckland branch sponsors relevant student ecological research on a one-off basis.
For example, the NZ Ecological Society has an annual conference which allows ecologists, including students researching ecological work, to display their research. In 2008 the branch sponsored the best student research project at the society's research day. The winner of the student section of the NZ Ecological Society conference in 2008 was Ben Barr from Massey University, Albany Campus. His research and presentation was on the chevron skink.
In 2011 an award went to a PhD student, Jennifer Laycock, at Massey Albany campus for research into native frogs
