Waitaki Branch

About Us

Our branch covers the areas from the Waitaki River to the Pleasant River near Palmerston and west to Ohau. We have around 70 members.

To find out more about the Waitaki branch please contact Chloe at waitaki.branch@forestandbird or 03 437 0127.

Local Treasures

Our natural treasures include the little blue penguin colony in Oamaru harbour and the yellow eyed penguin colony at Bushey Beach.

We have critically endangered flora such as the native broom, Carmichaelia hollowayii, Convulvulus waitaha, Gingidia spp. and Gentianella spp., found only in the unique limestone outcrops in North Otago.

These limestone outcrops contain many marine fossils formed at a time when the sea was much further inland.

Get involved

We will be hosting field trips, talks and working bees as and when needed. In the near future, we will be undertaking regular bird surveys, pleasant walking trips and habitat restoration. All events are open to the public to encourage participation in conservation.

Branch events include field trips, bird surveys, indoor meetings with a variety of speakers, protecting penguin and sooty shearwater habitat, pest control and replanting projects in local reserves.
