What's this?

Description: An offshore, deepwater species that is widely distributed around New Zealand and caught as bycatch in trawl fisheries, particularly the hoki fishery.

Ecological concerns: The absence of some basic biological information, the absence of a quantitative stock assessment, the unknown sustainability of recent catch levels and the absence of a management plan. The fishery also has direct impacts on seafloor communities as a result of trawl fishing. As lookdown dory is a bycatch of other fisheries, it is also associated with seabird, marine mammal and other non-target fish bycatch.

Economic value: Lookdown dory is sold in New Zealand and Asia.
