From coastal seas to the deep open ocean, the marine environment stores huge quantities of carbon in living organisms, in sediments and dissolved in the water. Perhaps we can add to this store by drawing down carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and in so doing help solve the climate crisis. The range of possibilities is wide, from restoring mangroves and sea grass beds to developing high tech methods based on chemistry to allowing whale populations to recover. Which methods have best potential? How quickly might they be able to be implemented? For how long might the carbon remain sequestered away from the atmosphere? How difficult might it be to measure the success, or failure, of each method? How much carbon dioxide could be drawn down into the ocean compared with our emissions now and in the future? We will discuss at least some of this!
