Upper Hutt Branch is currently investigating the Mangaroa Wetland (Waipango Swamp) which is a 300ha area of peatland in Mangaroa Valley that is currently being farmed and subdivided. We want all further farming and development work to be stopped and the area designated a Significant Natural Area. Peatlands are a significant and highly efficient carbon sink, water purifier and natural wonder. We want to investigate the feasibility of rewetting and restoring of the peat wetland as a huge opportunity for climate-change mitigation and developing the area as a reserve and return the original flora to the area and providing a habitat for fish, reptiles, birds and small invertebrates. It could be a tourist attraction for the area with boardwalks, viewing areas and information boards.
