Too Cool to Lose

Conservation area:

Aotearoa New Zealand has some of the most interesting, wonderful, and downright weird wildlife and wild places around.  Many of these critters and habitats are found nowhere else.

But, right now, climate change is a big problem facing them, and we need to act!

Why it matters

They're too cool to lose and it's too warm to wait. We need climate action now to secure their futures.

Biodiversity is the variety of wildlife and wild places existing all around us. It's vital — for the health, resilience, and sustainability of the environment on which we all rely!

One of the biggest problems facing biodiversity is climate change — whether it's rising temperatures, rising sea levels, extreme weather events, or another impact. Climate change is often the final straw in an already huge pile of challenges for animals, plants, and places.

Aotearoa New Zealand happens to be a biodiversity hotspot, which makes efforts to protect biodiversity here even more important!

In 2025, we will be celebrating 50 of these awesome and unique native species/places impacted by climate change. You'll be able to find them all here on this webpage.

What can you do

“This is significant moment in terms of how we see ourselves and our natural world. We need to start thinking about the ecosystem as a whole, because the challenges facing our environment are urgent. Nature doesn’t have the benefit of time for people to be mucking about.” Nicola Toki, Forest & Bird Chief Executive.
