The Allan Herbarium is the largest herbarium in New Zealand with over 700,000 specimens. Two-thirds of the specimens are of indigenous plants but it includes the largest collections from the Subantarctic Islands of the Pacific and Atlantic oceans. The oldest samples are the 91 duplicate specimens collected by Banks and Solander during Captain Cook's first voyage to New Zealand, 1769 -1770.
Directions: Look for the sign Manaaki Whenua, half way between Lincoln University and Lincoln township centre, opposite the Lincoln dentist. Meet at the entrance just opposite the first carpark at 1.50 pm so we can sign in before we meet our guide.
