The kea's silly antics have made it famous around the world, but life for last year's Bird of the Year isn't easy. Once abundant, there are only 3,000 - 7,000 birds left in the wild.
Laura Young from the Kea Conservation Trust will speak at our monthly meeting about her work to protect the world's only alpine parrot, as well as the campaign to win Bird of the Year. She will update us on the Kea Database - a citizen science project to monitor kea.
Laura completed her PhD at the University of Canterbury, which looked into the foraging behaviours of kea and their role in dispersing the fruit of alpine plants.
Forest & Bird South Canterbury Monthly Meetings
We hold monthly branch meetings on the third Thursday of every month (except December and January) from 7:30 p.m. at St. John's Hall on Wai-iti Road in Timaru.
Our meetings are open to anyone who wishes to attend and feature a guest speaker on conservation-related topics followed by supper and an opportunity to catch up with fellow members.
