Join Forest & Bird's Dunedin Branch for a field trip to Swampy Summit to the North of Dunedin.
A regionally significant wetland (just under 50 acres in size) is found near Swampy Summit. It is a peat bog that was formed in a hollow near the summit. Over time, sphagnum moss has covered the area.
We will drive up onto Swampy Summit, and walk across the top, exploring the subalpine vegetation, bogs and tarns.
An option is then to then walk down Swampy Spur through subalpine scrub, montane and cedar forest, to the carpark at the top of the Northern motorway where we will have cars to return drivers to their cars.
Trip leader is Paul Smale (027 384 5738).
Bring lunch, water, suitable footwear, and warm clothing.
