The Central Hawkes Bay branch encompasses the area between Otane and Dannevirke. We are one of the smaller Forest & Bird branches, with around 60 members.
We hold monthly branch meetings on the first Thursday of every month, where current environmental issues and projects are discussed. Often these meetings host guest speakers on conservation-related topics.
Meetings commence at 7.30pm in the staffroom of Waipukurau School on St. Marys Road. Branch meetings are open to all. If you would like more information, please contact , so if you’d like to come please send us an email.
Projects
The Central Hawke’s Bay branch is responsible for maintaining Lindsay Bush, a small reserve at the end of Lindsay Road, outside of Waipukurau. Lindsay Bush is home to kahikatea and many species of native ferns
Our branch is responsible for maintaining the reserve, to ensure the forest remains healthy. The reserve contains a network of pest traps, which are cleared every two weeks by volunteers, and every quarter we hold a working day to clear weeds and maintain tracks in the area.
We are also involved in the protection of an endangered bittern colony living on Lake Hatuma, near Waipukurau Racecourse.
To protect these birds the lake’s edge has been laid with traps which are regularly checked by volunteers. We are looking at becoming more involved in this once we gather the required numbers of people to help.
