Degradation of waterways is an important issue in the Wairarapa.
The health and limited biodiversity in Wairarapa Moana are of serious concern. Rivers and streams are affected by farming stock and run off, by water use and by township sewage schemes.
There are a number of local initiatives to restore the health of particular streams such as the Makoura Stream and the Mangaterere River. Many of our members actively support these projects through planning, monitoring, publicity, clearing rubbish and planting.
